A little, cute/interesting thing I learned that made me appreciate the proposal scene in the end of Fullmetal Alchemist…
My ASL (American Sign Language) teacher is from Japan and she was telling us a story about how her boyfriend at the time proposed to her and she explained that in Japan, proposals are a bit more subtle. Instead of straight up asking someone “Will you marry me?” the man asks a more trivial-seeming question that implies spending the two spending the rest of their lives together (example: Like “Would you make breakfast every morning for me” or something like that).
So after my teacher told us that story, I suddenly realized why Ed didn’t straight up ask Winry to marry him and instead came up with the whole “Equivalent Exchange” proposal and being given that insight made the scene even sweeter!
